The NER of India is known for its traditional systems of agriculture, biodiversity, varied agro-climatic situations, and host of exotic horticultural produce and native varieties of some high-value crops. Keeping all the factors in mind the region is found to be ideal for the production of organic farming.
The NER is commonly known for its sustainable Organic farms and over time has emerged as the country's nascent organic food market for exotic crops like Black Rice, Red Rice, Kali Khasa, Joha Rice (different varieties of exotic rice), Lakadong Turmeric, King Chilli, Kiwi, Khasi Mandarin, Kachai, Lemon, Bird-eye Chilli, Dalle Chilli, Avocado, Persimmon, Queen Pineapples, Fresh Ginger, etc.
The NER presents a great opportunity for India's food processing Industry. A number of unique and exportable commodities are being grown with surplus quantities, which can be exported from the region. With value addition closer to the production areas, these commodities could be made export ready and generate greater income for farmers. 1.9 lakh farmers covering a staggering area of 1.73 lakh hectares have been promoted under the Mission of Organic Value chain scheme(MOVCDNER), and 345 Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs) have constantly put efforts into value addition of various crops.
